We went to Villa Mkt for the first time today. Miss W was like a kid in a candy shop, looking at packaged food she had never seen in life. The words "paaeng bai" seemed to come out of her mouth about every 10 seconds. Maybe I've turned a bit too native over the years and this selection of motherland food didnt set off any tastebud alarms for me. Miss W wanted to try microwave popcorn, so we paid the 148 baht, and proceeeded to ChatChai, a market we both seem more comfortable in. I won't be a regular, but I'm sure during the holiday season I'll be back there buying a nice package of Gruyere and a bottle of Merlot. A nice place for special occasions, when a bowl guay dtiaao mhoo just isnt going to cut it.
Made our first visit to Villa last night. It was orgasmic. So much so that all my cash was ejaculated quite quickly from my wallet!
Seriously though, just wandering around the shelves and seeing old favourites. Bird's Eye fish fingers, pickled onions/eggs, Crumpets, all flavours of Bisto, Colmans mustard in jars, huge selection of cheeses - remember 'Crackerbarrel'?, veal, Dutch organic tomatoes, cherries, plums, all manner of cereals, Heinz baked beans, excellent wine selection at reasonable prices, etc, etc.
Very pricey. Heinz Beans at 148 baht a tin. I used to buy them in Malaysia at 3 ringit (30 baht). The Dutch tomatoes came out at 70 baht each, but they were excellent.
Good job there's an ATM at the check-out. I'd certainly go back again but not on a regular basis. I'd be broke quite quickly.
Service was excellent. Get to the checkout, someone unloads your trolley, bags the goods up after being 'beeped', then takes everything out to your car. And with a smile!

Shit, I KNEW I'd missed something! Mrs D-M was following me round tutting like a... like a... right old tutter... - she couldn't get me out of there quickly enough! Next time I go, it will be on my own. "I'm just popping out for a packet of Golden Virginia, my sweet little turtledove, please may I have my atm card...?"HHTel wrote: Bird's Eye fish fingers

Yeeeees, I saw that, and I wasn't tempted - I'm a Campbells Pork 'n Beans convert since I've been here.Heinz Beans at 148 baht a tin

I did look again at the website and have to admit I misread it the first time. It echoes exactly what you say.Nereus wrote:
As far as I am aware Villa has no connection with the Trinity Group, apart from being a tenant in their building.
Villa still advertise as a family company, and from what I recall of conversations with the old Gentleman, he would not claim to be something that they are not. One comment from him that sticks in my failing memory from 20 years ago was his response to a comment from me about how good the shop was: "it is YOU, the customer, that makes this place what it is". I doubt that is something you are likely to hear from any Chinese influenced business.
What a pity there are not more like him. A true competitor would lower prices also.
This addiction to Heinz beans is strange to me. Whilst growing up in the UK we always had Crosse and Blackwell by choice. Even HP were better than Heinz IMHO. JD does stock Crosse and Blackwell at they are less than 50 Baht I think. In the UK we paid more for them.
I think a lot of tastes are acquired when young and never leave. Everybody all over the world has some craving for what they grew up with. I like Marmite but I have never found anybody who likes it that did not grow up in the UK.
I let a Turkish au pair of mine try some once and she was sick.

Hi there Y'all HHAD Friends and fellas!!!
Here I am in Hua Hin again after a roughlt 4 months abscent Time!
Today I had my own 1st timer @ Hua Hin Villa Market and I here's my rewiew of that place.
As I walked towards the Entrance of that place with my extra bright Adidas Referee shirt on I noticed that the entrance/exit Area was wide and claear Whis was kinda nice. The first thing I've done was snaking along the Ilse to see which stuff I regohnise from my old days and stuff I remember from The USA.
As other had said it quite rightly It's a "Hogs Paradise" I had seen stuff from my stuff that I remeber from my diffrent trips through Europe. The German munchies Department was more than well represented there @ Villa allthoughthey not have my favorite Brand and flavor of German Chips/Crisps that I'm all Mad about. (As I wrote in another Villa tread before before I would dress in Drag and do a Hula as store advert if they have it their initial opennign Stoc!) But They have German Chips/Crisps I bought some German Snacks. which cost about as much in Bangkok even in Hua Hin. Their CHese Dept is simply one of a kind and,It;s Meatt counter got all the Cut of of meet someone need for a Real Grill Party.
While I was snaking though the Ilses and saw all those Yummi stuff I asked myself "Why? Why wasn't Villa there during the Time I'd studyied @ Stamford Univ. (1999 to 2004) I would have gone there every once every months to get some foreign stuff I craved. But as was snaking along anf bought all those stuff I wanted. I find it Cool that Hua Hin hads finally A Villa to call their own.
This whole Center where Villa Market is located on reminds me vididly of a US Strip Mall with it's parking spaces and ect. But yet on the other hand its So much better. I can say It's a Strip Mall Thai Style. but I can Imagine parking spaces can be a little tough wjhen it's evening hours drive time sets IN.

Don't worry about it US. If someone gets on your case just tell them to reply to you in Thai and then see who loses face. The understudy wrote:Aehhh you don't have to PET it's OKPET wrote:I do not rate the Stamford education after reading this !!

Or German, Understudy, as I happen to know you're fluent in German too, having heard you speaking it. I wish I was fluent in 2 languages, never mind 3!!!prcscct wrote:Don't worry about it US.
