2012 olympics in London.

Post by komfortablynumb »

Wasn't the presentation of the Olympic flame from the Good people of China to the good people of London wonderful. (sorry GB)
Did you feel the emotion?
Did your heart just skip a beat and was a tear in your eye?
WELL.
Mine didn't .
Just a little question.
When was the last time a London bus turned up on time?
6000 miles it seems easy.
Where where the following 4?
In camouflage?
The last time a London bus turned up on time in a foreign country was in 1962 when Sir Cliff and his mates drove to Greece.

I try to avoid late night buses.
Not seen too many superstars on them.
Pointless being graphic on what you see.

I must commend the UK for only spending 9 BN pounds on the next Olympic games.
Apparently according to Boris there may be some change.

Have i lost the point?

Runners run.
Cyclist cycle.
Swimmers swim.

Do it all naked.

Rich countries spend millions of dosh, Aerodynamcally shaping there
athletes.
And there equipment.

It is still possible that sport can remain a sport.

The obscene wages paid to footballers in the UK , the obscene advertising that goes on in all sport.
It's not right.

Give me the 9 bn pounds.
Be nice. let all children drink fresh water, and not die, along with adults from Malaria.
Sorry.
Was just havinfg a dream :D

Well, going back to the title of this thread..... :)

Kind of looking foward to it - it should bring a little humility to the event, without the superpower mania choreographed 'aren't we really the superpower we promised to be' kind of thing.

Mechanical show with power and movement but not much finesse or artistry, for this spectator at least.

I hope London takes it back to the basics, it should be a people thing, not a power thing.

Rock on.
Maybe if we did it in black and white it may work. :D

Funniest thing for me was Jimmy Page pulling his 'rock face'. It made my day...
I am looking forward to it in 4 years. Problem is I probably wont be in England...

I was living in Sydney at time of the 2000 Games and it was an absolute blast. If it is anywhere near as good as that was, it will be great.

I did not go to see any of the games, but the atmosphere in the city and all of the improvements that happened in and around the city, Sydney are still benefiting from.

Still after the Olympics the City is still having new facilities being produced and improvements being carried out, so if the same happens to London it will only be beneficial in the long run.

In answer to public transport. Sydney's public transport never runs on time even before and after the games, but for the four weeks of the games there was not a problem, all went well. All staff holidays canceled etc to make sure that all run on time.

I am sure it will be a blast in 4 years time and hope that everyone gets behind it to make it a games to remember.

2012 Olympics in London

Post by margaretcarnes »

Missed the 'handing over' stuff back to London yesterday (oh dear what a shame never mind.)
Yes - a little humility brought back to the games would be great. Shouldn't be difficult with Tessa Jowell and Boris Johnson around. They'll probably lose the memory stick containing the master plan anyway :lach:

Government juggling with figures. Most of that budget would have to be spent anyway. The overall net effect of hosting the Olympics must be favorable to the host nation if they can afford the initial investment.

9BN is what a large British corporate would submit as taxable profit for good year or one month's UK disposable income.

I am afraid I did though.

But a good sentiment.

Just a point here, not a complaint.

The soccer fans have to use the sport section where their posts never show on the top 15 list. As this thread is set to carry on for at least four years I think it should be moved to Sport.

Hopefully we won't see London Olympics, 2012 Olympics, next Olympics and every other permutation added as threads.

Maybe it is a suitable candidate for a sticky.

Large Sauternes for me please.

Think I'll be skipping the opening and closing ceremonies...

Boris Johnson has no dignity at all, what a slob he looked with his jacket open, hands in pockets. It does not bode well for these games with this colonial buffoon at the helm.

With regard to the British 8 minute segment in the handover, it was crap. A double decker bus, Beckham and Leona Lewis. Or was it a failed transport system, a past it footballer and a winner of the crappy X Factor?

Let's face it modern U.K. culture is a disgrace. What are we going to see at the opening ceremony? Some warped vision of Britain as seen by a member of our cultural elite (i.e. the London organizers, the BBC, etc). A crappy, celeb obsessed, Equalities-derived vision of 'normal' people that normal people wouldn't recognize. A celebration of Smut, Street Crime and Graffiti? Can't wait.

So what might we see?

I once attended a Highland Games with the Royals in attendance.

Stirring stuff from the pipe bands.
Morris Dancers?
Irish reels?
Welsh... err... rugby?
I know, Horses & Hounds tearing a fox to pieces! Luvverly.
A few Beefeaters. Maybe a changing of the guard. Johnny Foreigner loves that kind of thing.
Got to have the 'trendy' dustbin-lid bangers.
How about a pile of burned cows?
Break-dancing 'hoodies'?
What about an Eastenders set where everyone snarls at each other? They could lip-synch to a new number specially written for the event... 'What ya ferkin' lookin' at, ya c**t'.

Makes me fill up wiv pride, it does.

How about chimney sweeps? Fagin picking a pocket or two? Mary Poppins? Peter Pan? Gary Glitter (Just joking, just joking).

There must be more but I'm already too depressed.

Wait! I've got it. Why didn't I think of it before?

Sir Elton!

A couple of thousand pearly kings and queens havin' a right ol' cockney knees up. Thums in lapels, high kicking it to the Bill theme tune.
Followed by Noel (tidy beard) Edmund's phoning the up the banker of England on a bastard big phone to declare 'No deal'.
The kids from Grange hill all knifing each other to Lord (twatty trousers) webber's new musical 'fings ain't like they was guvnor, have a bleedin bananna for gawd's sake'
A double episode of 'Blankety blank' with the surviving cast of 'On the Buses'
Crowned off by a chorus of 'Oh what a lovely war' sung by Del boy and Rodney, accompanied by Buffoon Boris on spoons and hair.
Sweet as my son...

An article in one UK paper last week was saying that after Beijing’s lavish opening ceremony, London would have to come up with something better than 20 Morris dancers in the shape of a pork-pie!

I don't think the UK is looking at China as an example, Sydney keeps being mentioned for the reasons Chelsea stated. A lot of the feedback about the recent games is how well organised everything was blah, blah, blah - but where was the spirit? But how can there be when everything is so controlled?

I quite like Boris Johnson and he pulled the plug on a lot of Livingstones plans for China, including retinues, saying it was a waste of money.
