Thais stop storm surges

Post by Vital Spark »

I've just read this little snippet from the Bangkok Post, and you've just got to laugh. The problem is they're serious. :?

SAMUT PRAKAN : A total of 499 Buddhist, Christian, Islamic and Hindu priests and a Buddha statue in the ''Calming the Ocean'' posture will take part in a ritual next Tuesday to keep the province's coastline safe from storm surges. Provincial governor Anuwat Maytheewibulwut said the ''Stop the wind, stop the water'' ceremony will be held at the provincial hall in Muang district.

I'm going to write to the Provincial Governor to remind him to invite King Canute (or Cnut) as he was formerly called by the Anglo-Saxons...

You gotta love em eh.....

"So your holiness...what are we doing again?"

"We are turning back the tide my son".

"But about this King Canute bloke...remember I told you about him?"

"Look my son, sod history....he was a farang and we are Thai....we are right. Anyway....theres more of us".

"But he drowned didnt he?"

"Lack of faith son....total lack of faith. Now, look at that Moses chap....HE had faith.....parted the sea AND then drowned a whole army with it afterwards....class".

"Oh right....those waves look awfully big though your holiness"

"Faith son....have faith."

499 monks line up along the beach.....meanwhile out at sea a mother of a wave swells up and storms towards the line of monks....

"Right then lads...best foot forwards...prayer beads at the ready....all together now .... Ohm na ma...."

WHOOSSHSSSHHHHHHH glug glug glug......

This comic interlude was brought to you by Conky and Sandman....both of whom think concrete storm walls work better than faith and a few prayers.

A relative of KhunT perhaps?

It reminds me of the long hot summer in London in 1976. After about two months of it the Hindus and Sikhs in Southall got together and performed a rain ritual. It rained the following day.

Well, the monks on ze mountain have been at it since 4 am today...bells and singing, and some kind of cymbals banging every now and then.
so I am sure the storm is under control...
