TLAs

Post by Big Boy »

I am a Civil Servant, working in the UK. At work I am often baffled by TLAs, but it is a way of life in the Civil Service, and you learn to live with it.

I've also noticed a tendency to use TLAs regularly on this forum, with one being used as a subject header earlier today. OK, I worked it out eventually, but why, why, why do we do it to ourselves?

IMO if one uses a TDA that the majority will not know the text should be written first and the TDA in brackets afterwards

Maybe someone should compile a TDA database :D

Correct English
A tla should not be used in the heading. The first time it is used it should be followed by the full details in brackets.

richard,
I hate to be picky but WGAS and FAFITS are not TLAs. The first is a FLAB (Four Letter ABbreviation) and the second is YASLA (Yet Another Six Letter Acronym). But then again I am a NPB (work it out yourselves :D )

I'll ask. What is a TLA?

And yes, I have spent all bar one-year of my career working for either the UK central or Local Govt!
