Cost of living in Hua Hin

Post by glyngsd »

Hi, new to the board. Great site and very informative :)
Sure this question has been asked before, but can't find it. Can anyone give advice of how much a couple would need to live comfortably in Hua Hin ?
Say, with air con, average sized house (no rent), internet and satelite tv and health insurance etc.
Thanks in advance

120k baht per month... will pay your bills including insurance and allow you to go out to eat regularly, have some fun, and not worry about money. If you want to do a lot of international travel it will be more.

Many people are about to come on here and argue this is too much, and sure, there are expats who live here on probably 40k per month, but take it from me... you need 120k per month if you don't want to worry about money and want to have a good life in Hua Hin. I've been here for seven years and when I came I was fine with 120k, which is now 80k because of the drop in value of the dollar and we are struggling just to get by, and our fun is cheap Thai restaurants once a week and a couple of rounds of golf per month at a lousy cheap course.... 120k minimum! Mark my words!
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

It's well documented about my feelings for Ian H*ll*w*y (sorry, the forum's foul language filter has just kicked in). I could not wish any team managed by that snake in the grass well (nothing personal). I'm willing to discussus further on the correct forum, but for now we must get back on topic :offtopic:

Here's over 200k without even thinking hard about it, I'm not saying we or anyone else needs to do & spend all this stuff, but apart from gardner/house cleaner (wife works & helps looks after kid), dogs, immigration, then leaving aside how much is spent... is there really much on this list you wouldn't do back home?

30k car finance/tax/ins/repairs
30k wife allowance food/groceries/clothes/make-up/toiletries/small bills)
60k entertainment/meals out/drinking/clothes/golf/local trips/gym/hobbies
15k gardener/pool cleaner/house cleaner
10k kids school fees
5k kid clothes/nappies/extra stuff at school/savings acc/books/DVD's/friends parties
10k elec/water/gas bills
3k service or new air-cons/wash machine/fridge/oven/lawn mower/pool equip/gate motors/TV's
2k immigration/helmet fines/tea money
3k dogs (we got 5 :? )
2k insurances
3k inlaw donations
4k internet/phone bills/new mobiles
3k car/bike fuel, motorbike stuff
3k house upgrades/improvements
10k international travel/trip back 'home' (we don't do it)

And Super Joe's list doesn't include if you rent. He does have house upgrades and improvements, but if you rent it may not be directly comparable!

I imagine there must be for most people SJ; 200,000bt a month works out at roughly about £18,000 a year more than the UK average salary!

:agree: Spending £4,000 or £2,400 a month would be a dream in the UK. OK, if you've got it, I wish you the best of luck in flaunting it. However, going back to the OP, it sounds more like scaremongering rather than answering the question.

The OP was simply asking for air con, average sized house (no rent), internet and satelite tv and health insurance etc. You've obviously applied a lot of poetic license to the etc.

Strange comment considering I specifically said:
"I'm not saying we or anyone else needs to do & spend all this stuff"
It's a pick-list of items that I know of and how much they can cost, if you're a dog lover you know what food & vet costs might be... if you're not too able bodied you know what gardening, pool & cleaning fees might be... and so on.
I know there's loads of things I never considered that I wish I had.

The OP asked: "Can anyone give advice of how much a couple would need to live comfortably in Hua Hin ?"

For both the OP and any other newcomers that read this, I don't see it's gonna help them much if some of the things they 'may' be keen on to live comfortably, are left off.

:offtopic: Anyway, apologies if I've sent it off on a bit of a tangent, not intentional at all.

Super Joe - so translating (just the first 4 items...):

US$1000 car finance/tax/ins/repairs
US$1000 wife allowance food/groceries/clothes/make-up/toiletries/small bills)
US$2000 entertainment/meals out/drinking/clothes/golf/local trips/gym/hobbies
US$500 gardener/pool cleaner/house cleaner
etc. Monthly!

That does seem rather a lot to me. Not questioning how you spend your money, but I think most people could get by on somewhat less. Probably quite easily.
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....
