Had my Visa card blocked in Singapore about 2 years ago. It was a UK Visa Card from LLoyds.

A phone call, a few personal questions answered, and it was released immiedatley and I was able to use it in the shop where I first encountered the problem.

Have you tried phoning them? Maybe it will be as simple for you as it was for me.

My Barclays Connect debit card (Visa) has been blocked on numerous occasions as statements go to the UK but it's being used here. I now have to telephone them every now and then to stop them blocking again. As with Winkie, the card is activated in about 15 mins, if it's been blocked.
The number I call is in Northampton (which is where the main Visa office is, I believe). This might be the same number you need, bozzman101:

01604 614812. If it's the wrong place, they might be able to point you in the right direction? I always call early in the morning from here as you get through to an operative quickly with the time difference. The place is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
PS: if you're using a mobile to call, prefix the number with 009 44 16 etc. Calls are cheap. I never spend much more than 60 Baht to get the job done.

There will be phone number on the reverse side of your card for lost or stolen cards - just phone them and they should be able to connect you to the correct department.

Seems we all have these problems from time to time but a phone call soon sorts things out.

It might be an idea to give your card company your mobile phone number and then if they think there is a problem they phone you - usually within the hour.

I hope I can clear things up a little but you are unlikely to get a quick solution but TIT so maybe.

The card is owned by the issuing bank in Ireland.

Northampton is the address for Barclaycard (not relevant to you). The Visa office responsible for Ireland is in London. The only UK & Ireland office that I am aware off.

www.visa.com

You can go to your country from there via a link.

The owners of the ATM are only allowed to hold your card if the issuing bank permits them to do so under the rules of Visa.

Witholding your card, stopping your card and temporary blocking your card are three separate transactions.

If your card is stopped there is no reversal procedure.

If it is blocked there is.

If the card has been withheld by a bank there is no immediate need to do either.

The solution.

The first step is to take all ID you have including accommodation contracts to the acquiring bank (the bank that owned the ATM). Tell them your story. You may need to supply your PIN but it will be with a PIN entry pad connected to a PC. Do not write it down or tell anybody. If you suspect that someone in the bank got access then change the PIN as soon as you get the card back.

It maybe that easy if you are lucky.

If the card has been destroyed, sent back in the Visa pipeline to the issuing bank or stopped then you have to reapply from your bank.

If the card is still in possession of the bank but they will not hand it over or it has been blocked you need to contact your bank to get it released.

You will almost certainly need an Irish address if you get a replacement card sent. The banks do not like sending cards and PINs out of their home countries. You don't want it either even if you think you do.

What confuses me is that you have to miss key your PIN three times before it is captured.

If that did not happen you have a very good case with the acquiring bank.

visa card

Post by baron_wastelanduk »

a few years ago i used my egg card in the 7/11 ATM in soi cowboy i got cash but the machine kept my card.
when i went into the 7/11 to ask they told me the atm engineer would be back at 9pm
i duly went back there at just b4 9pm to be told that the engineer had been and gone and that i would need to contact the bank whose atm it was. cant remember which bank but thats kind irrelevent. next day i called the bank and was told to go to the office at asoke by the bridge which i did - i then sat inn the bank for an hour waiting for various fone calls to be made - the upshot of this was my card was in possession of another branch and could i go to rama iv to collect - we arranged to meet at the atm in the big c
after waiting for what seemed hours and several phone calls to see where the bloody hell they were some officials truned up asked to see my passport and driving license which they then copied and made me sign the copies.
they then handed back the card - two bloody days i wasted chasin that card
and a lot of frustration!!!!!!!!
still TIT

Good point about Ireland, Guess. I didn't see that.
However, it dosn't seem as if the card's been eaten by the ATM. Just blocked after one failed attempt with the PIN number.

Mine was eaten on the way to Bk

My fault, withdrew the cash and jumped in the car to carry on to BK. Realised and double uturned back only to find no card

Staff said after a period of time of non retrieval it's eaten

Called my Bank in the car and they stopped it immediately reciting the last few transactions I had made

Back in HH I wen to Bangkok Bank and they advised me a new card and Pin envelope would be there in one week

It was and no problems or worries

Yes you get three goes. So the bank have screwed up. I presume you went in there like I told you yesterday.

Let us know if your bank:

Sends a card from Ireland to Thailand.

Issue you with a new PIN and card number.

PS. When I opened a Bank of Ireland account they had to have and Irish address and they would not send anything anywhere but there. 15 years ago though.

With my Lloyds account I get this card protection service from Sentinel for free:http://www.sentinelcardprotection.com/index.htm
I lost a Visa card in Luxembourg last year and they got me a temporary card and PIN sent by Fedex within about 36 hours over a weekend to a hotel address. They claim that they will do this world-wide so for anyone who is reliant on a UK card in Thailand it might be worth considering.
I never thought much about it until I had to use the service, but I have to say that they were very efficient and did everything as advertised.

7-11 shop near railwayline- lost card

Post by peter48 »

Just a note to say be carefull of the 'second' 7-11 shop after the railwayline crossing as you go up on the right near little night market as several people have now reported cards getting stuck in that machine. I had to ring UK and cancel my visa card as it happened on a saturday night . The shop girls say dysfunctional machine- it happens often.

My new rule - only use ATMs outside big banks in town etc., not off beaten track.
