It's amusing when people who think they know about IT get scared and defensive about stuff they know nothing about ;) Funny that, I could say exactly the same about someone, their patterns of ignoring the rest of the board and derailing nearly every technical discussion because 'they know better' i...

Ignored your comment about no perfect antivirus solution? Really?
Regarding things getting past NOD, they do indeed, as they do with any antivirus

Comodo is good but to be honest Avast couldn't catch a cold. It's useless at detecting anything but the most mundane old viruses. I beg to differ, having used pretty much ALL of the AV solutions out there I have found Avast to be one of the better ones - it will find stuff that Norton and Mcafee mi...

I've now installed Malwarebytes across our entire network and can confirm that is is clean and safe. It only works with XP and Vista though. Certain internet security suites such as Norton and Kasperspy can be overly sensitive and cry wolf at everything they're not familiar with, I never bother wit...

Well I've been using it in Windows and Linux on a variety of connections here in Thailand without problems, which probably means you made a typo somewhere in the settings.

In the event of DNS problems, just use OpenDNS (which also serves as an excellent family internet filter if you set it up right).

Personal recommendation: Use EDGE via your mobile phone, I've been on this since my CAT connection collapsed 4 months ago and I haven't had a problem with it - its just as fast as your mickey mouse "3Mb, 590baht" bullshit the main providers are selling and you can access it remotely from ...

To be honest I'm not that much of a cheapskate as to actually do it but I just like finding these things, just for the hell of it really. Btw if you want your stuff private don't use Sunshine Wi-Fi. The connection's unencrypted so it's a fairly simple matter of using something like Wireshark or Ette...

EDGE is excellent. Free tip for those using Sunshine Wireless. 1. Connect to wi-fi. 2. Sign-up page, sign up to freebie using any old email address (can be fake) 3. Half-hour use. 4. Change your Wi-Fi card's MAC address when time's up and repeat process. Fairly trivial in Linux (using macchanger-gtk...

Went down today to get some info, no indication about English language, no advertising, and no-one at the ticket desks to sell me a ticket even if I wanted to watch something. Do they have a single brain cell between them?

The best free software? Linux. http://www.ubuntu.com you can dual-boot with Windows easy enough. 90% of the software available for it is free, and you just choose it from a list to install it. No viruses, no pirating stuff, no hassle.

Windows does tend to accumulate crap at an alarming rate. These methods are only temporary measures. Frankly with Windows it's generally a good idea to backup -> Format -> Reinstall about once every 3 months, or 6 months if you're very tolerant. Fragmentation is a large enough issue, but also crap l...

I'd suggest your bittorrent client is misconfigured. Have a look at http://www.utorrent.com/ it's free, lightweight (doesn't use much RAM or CPU) and I've always found it very easy to use. On non-windows machines I tend to use Transmission, but on Windows utorrent's your best bet.

Forgot to mention, the time saved in terms of administering a large network more than makes up for any time spent learning the thing :)
